The 18

th annual Idaho State Arm Wrestling Championships will be held on Saturday, September 4th at the Eastern Idaho State Fair in Blackfoot.

            The event – held at 2 pm at the Key Bank Community Free Stage located behind the grandstands – is open to the public to compete. There will be weight divisions for all ages starting with a class of age 6 & under for the kids, as well as divisions for those over age 40. 

“We have one of the largest events in the West with a large turnout of youth entries,” says tournament director Elaine Blik of Aberdeen. “It is a fun event to watch especially when the younger children take the stage. All the parents and grandparents are there to support the kids in their quest for a state title.”

            Registration begins at 12 pm and the competition will begin at 2 pm with the Novice Divisions.  A parent or guardian signature is required for those under...

The 2010 Eastern Idaho State Fair returns to Blackfoot on Saturday, September 4, and runs through Saturday, September 11. Gate admission prices are $6 for adults ages 12 & up; $4 for Senior Citizens ages 65+; $2 for students ages 6-11; admission is FREE to children ages 5 and under. A Season Pass, which includes gate and horse racing admission for the full week, is $40.

    POCATELLO — Derek Knapp, 16, the son of Gaynelle Knapp and Curt Knapp, recently became an Eagle Scout. His Court of Honor was held on March 28 at the Highland Stake Center.

    For his project, Derek designed and built a free-standing camp kitchen box to be utilized by the Young Men and Young Women of the Highland Ninth Ward.

    Derek is a member of Troop 369, where he has been patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and quartermaster. He attended several camps at Camp Little Lemhi and has participated in the Varsity High Adventures.

    He has served as a counselor in his deacon’s quorum and recently as president of his teacher’s quorum in the Highland Ninth Ward before being ordained a priest. He is a high honor student at Highland High School, where he has been active in basketball, football and golf. His hobbies include playing basketball and golf, riding motorcycles and jet skiing.

INSPIRE, the Idaho Connections Academy, a tuition-free, virtual public school serving students from across the state will host an information session for families in Pocatello on Wednesday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 1399 Bench Road.

POCATELLO — Patrick David Widdison, 15, 1672 Rainier Drive, Pocatello, Idaho and student at Franklin Middle School, recently became an Eagle Scout. For his project, he remodeled two leaky storage sheds containing camping equipment used by a church youth group. This entailed removing all the equipment from the sheds and doing an inventory and throwing away unnecessary items and cleaning moldy items. All the shelves had to be recut to fit properly and were cleaned and repainted, and new shelving brackets were installed. The inside of the sheds were cleaned and repainted and new concrete floors were laid in order to keep water from seeping under the doors. All the Scouts and leaders from Troop 357 helped. An Eagle Court of Honor awarding Patrick the rank of Eagle Scout was held on March 14, 2010. MALAD — William (Bill) Alan Colton turned 80 on Sunday, April 4; he celebrated his 80th birthday Saturday surrounded by family.

Bill was born in Malad and has lived his entire life there, raising two children while working as a rancher, miller and as a maintenance man for the LDS Church.

Bill served an LDS mission in Washington and Oregon before joining the U.S. Army and serving as a radio operator in Korea.

He married Joyce Romrell and was sealed to her in the Logan LDS temple. Bill was surrounded by family and friends Saturday for a barbecue with cake and ice cream.

Also celebrating her 9th birthday the same day was Bill’s great-granddaughter, Burkley Balzer, of Preston.

Bill has two children, Teresa Balzer and Alan Colton, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He enjoys working on the LDS name extraction on his computer and consistently leads the Malad Stake in names submitted for work at the LDS temples.

POCATELLO — Richard R. Thomas will be 76 years old on April 7. His family is having a celebration of this event on April 10 between 2 and 4 p.m. at 5265 Mesquite Drive, Chubbuck, Idaho. We would love to have all Richard’s friends celebrate with him.

Richard is a native of Pocatello. He is the son of Milton and Mille Lewis Thomas. He graduated from Pocatello High in 1952. The military was his career, serving in both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army. In the last few years, he has enjoyed the Pocatello Senior Citizens Center. He has attended dances, sung with the Silver Chords and served lunches.

Richard and his wife, Donna, have five children, Michelle (Brad) Smith, Jacki (Keith) Moran, Stephanie (Jef) Hayes, Amber Thomas and Matthew Thomas. They have 10 grandchildren.

Richard now resides at Highland Hills Assisted Living.

LOGAN, Utah — Norma Hodges Arnell will be celebrating her 90th birthday along with her children and many of her grandchildren, in a session at the Logan Temple on April 10. Family and friends will gather for a luncheon following the session at her son, Brent’s, home in Providence, Utah.

Norma was born April 10, 1920 in Garden City, Utah, to Nathanial John and Rose Ellen Earley Hodges. She is the youngest of six children, three sisters and two brothers.

She met the love of her life, Cleneth E. Arnell, while attending North Rich High School in Laketown, Utah, where he officiated as a basketball referee. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1939, and returned to St. Charles, where they made their home together and raised their family.

She was instantly a mother to 4-year-old Douglas (Garna), and she and Cleneth were blessed with five additional children, Gary Lee, who died at the age of 20, Roger (Judy), Dallas (Theresa), Brent (Jan) and Maxine (David) Matthews. She is the proud grandmother...

POCATELLO — Please join us April 10, 2010, to wish Mary Belle Cleaver a happy birthday at the Central Christian Church, 918 E. Center St., between 2 and 5 p.m.

Mary is a native of Pocatello, born to Ralph and Maude Valent in the old St. Anthony Hospital April 12, 1930. She was raised on the old Yellowstone Highway, where Office Max is located now. She always laughs, saying she “lived in the country.” She had one brother, Raymond Valent.

She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1948. Then she worked for the Bell Corporation (Ma Bell) for six years.

She married her one and only, William (Bill) Cleaver, in 1951. Together they had four children, Mark (Maralie) Cleaver, Oahu, Hawaii, Greg (May) Cleaver, Renton, Wash., Rebecca (Peter) Amarteifio, Pocatello, Marjorie (Dave) Hunnewell, Morris, Ill. She has nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In 1966, she went to work for Eddie’s Bakery as a payroll clerk and worked there until they closed the office in Pocatello.

POCATELLO — The Pocatello High School Indianettes dance team has had a very successful year. They have gone to many competitions and have won several awards throughout the year. They are District 5 champions in all categories and won many state awards, and recently USA Nationals Championships in Anaheim, Calif. GREAT LAKES, Ill. — Navy Reserve Seaman Michael W. Downs, son of Darlene and Bret D. Downs of Downey, Idaho, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Downs completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly “Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.

POCATELLO —Cade Carlson, 16, son of Al and Michelle Carlson, was presented with the rank of Eagle Scout at a court of honor held Jan. 18. 

Cade is a member of Troop 395, sponsored by Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. He is a sophomore at Century High School. He started Scouting in the first grade. He received Arrow of Light February 2005. While in Boy Scouts, he has held the positions of patrol leader, quartermaster, librarian, and assistant senior patrol leader. He attended summer camps including Bear Lake aquatics, Island Park, Camp Aspen Ridge, High Adventure at Camp Morrison in McCall, and Cedar Badge youth leadership training. He was also a member of Order of the Arrow. 

His Eagle Scout project benefited the Idaho State Veterans home in Pocatello. He originated a media library. It consisted of CDs, DVDs, and cassettes, and players. He established a numbering check-out system and a color photo inventory of all items available for residents.

MISSOULA, Mont. — Zachary Hughes, of Pocatello, qualified for the dean’s list at the University of Montana in Missoula. To qualify for the list, students must be undergraduates, earn a semester grade average of 3.50 or higher, and receive grades of A or B in at least nine credits. Hughes is a general AA at Missoula. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 2008, and from Holy Spirit Catholic School in 2002.

McCAMMON — Bryton Todd Betty, 18, son of Todd and Wendy Betty, recently became an Eagle Scout. His Eagle Court of Honor will be Sunday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the McCammon Stake Center. For his Eagle project, he replaced old, broken headstones and placed new headstones on unmarked graves at the Norton Cemetery in McCammon.

He is a member of Troop 876 and has been captain and senior patrol leader. His Scouting activities include Klondike, regular camp-outs, he attended Scout Camp, canoed and rafted down the Snake River and hiked into White Clouds and Ironbog. He has been stake youth representative for the McCammon Ward, deacon’s quorum president, teacher’s quorum president and second assistant to the bishop.

He attends Marsh Valley High School, where he has been in Auto Club and football.

His hobbies are snowboarding, fishing, hunting, camping, off-roading, fixing cars and Pinewood Derby Unleashed.

McCAMMON — Kathleen (Kay) Bell Brower was born on April 2, 1930, in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, to Earl Frederick and Vesta Jones Bell. She was the sixth of 10 children. Mom grew up and went to school in Lava, graduating from Lava High School.

During her younger years, some while still in school, Mom worked for the movie house in Lava, passing out fliers for upcoming movies, at the Lava Drug Store as a clerk and for the state swimming pools doing various jobs, also located in Lava.

She married Dell Brower on Oct. 24, 1948, in Lava, and they later were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. This union brought four children, Sheila, Deanna, Shauna and Dennis. At this time there are 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dell and Kay lived in Lava after they were first married, then, believing they might have a future in Wisconsin, moved their family there. Wisconsin didn’t turn out to be a good move, so after a short time they moved back to Idaho, this time making a home in Pocatello. After a short time living...

POCATELLO — Ruth Fullmer is celebrating her 90th birthday. She was born April 2, 1920, in Aberdeen, Idaho, to Lawrence Delose Thornton and Luella Farnsworth. She is the fifth of 11 children born to her parents. All of her siblings and parents are deceased.

Ruth spent her preschool years in Montana. After starting school, her family moved back to Idaho, settling in the Kimball, Basalt and Shelley area. In 1937, they moved to a ranch in Mackay, Idaho, where Ruth worked and attended high school.

There she met her future husband, Myron Fullmer. They were married on June 17, 1938. They were together 59 years. Myron passed away in October of 1997, at the age of 79.

Ruth and Myron had three sons, Myron Jr., Donald, Vern, and one daughter, Sandra, deceased. She enjoys the company of six grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Ruth has many interests and hobbies. She paints in oils and acrylics, sews, is an avid reader of Western novels, has worked in the Idaho Falls Temple. For the past year she has lived at Cottonwood...

CHUBBUCK — Born in Pocatello March 29, 1922, Dellcene Hughes’ parents lived in Crystal, Idaho, but had to come to Pocatello for her to be born, and had to use a sleigh because of so much snow. At that time Pocatello had a Spanish flu epidemic, so the hospitals were full, and Grandma had to go to a hotel and have her baby.

She was born to Jay and Marcine Whiting and was the sixth of 12 children, all two years apart. She and her sister didn’t get much schooling because her mom was sick a lot or having babies. Her older sister and she had to help watch the kids and do chores. During the Depression they moved a lot and her father had sawmills up some of the canyons around Pocatello.

She rode horses and learned to hunt at an early age, which she was very good at. For entertainment the family was very musically inclined, so between banjos, pianos, guitars and singing they kept themselves and all the neighbors entertained.

Pvt. Miles M. Packard, of Pocatello, has completed his basic training along with his advanced individual training in the 2nd Battalion, 54th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga. Miles graduated on the 11th day of February 2010.

Miles had to compete a rigorous training program in basic for 10 weeks followed by additional AIT for another four weeks. Miles has had to learn the value of teamwork and self-achievement along with the high standards of the Army has set for him.

He has achieved leadership skills, greater marksmanship ability, weapons training, field exercises, and took first place in his weight division for combative skill where he is now a level one Jujitsu instructor.

Miles also completed and graduated from a three-week airborne training program at Fort Benning.

Pvt. Packard has since been stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, 82nd Airborne, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Platoon for additional training.
